The Prison Police Corps is one of five Italian police forces and is dependent on the Ministry of Justice's Prison Administration Department.

The corps is now a police force under civil law, also known as a "militarily organised body". The latter definition does not imply the militarisation of the corps, but the organisation which clearly refers to a military structure. The definition of "special order" is due to the fact that the staff of the Prison Police Corps (as well as that of the State Police and the State Forestry Corps) is different from the staff of any other of the Italian Republic's civil or military bodies.
