The Italian Army is the main and oldest component of the four Italian armed forces, of which it is part along with the Italian Navy, Air Force and Carabinieri Corps, all dependent on the Chief of Staff for Defence and incorporated into the Ministry of Defence.

The Italian Army began as a Royal Army in 1861 on the occasion of the unification of Italy, and acquired its current name after the birth of the Italian Republic in 1946. After the post-Second World War transition phase, a period during which some units were still under Allied control, Italy's entry into NATO led to a reorganisation and modernisation of the Italian Army as a force for contrasting possible military action by the forces of the Warsaw Pact.

In 2015, the Italian Army was the main defence force of the State and was deployed in various peacekeeping missions around the world.
