Wind instrument groups existed in ancient times. The Romans used them for religious, military and civilian events. The Middle Ages saw the formation of musical groups similar to the band, including the group that accompanied the Carroccio. However, the origin of the band, as it is understood today, dates back to the 14th century, when a small number of musicians served courts and lords with artistic and parade tasks. In the 18th century, the band was made up of a number of no more than eighteen elements; towards the end of the century, new instruments were refined and bands could be either civilian or military.

Today there are thousands of different bands, spread all over Italy.
